Bayern's Year in Facts and Figures

The year 2013 goes down as truly historic for Bayern, as the Reds collected an incredible five trophies and set a host of new records. fcbayern.de reviews the facts and figures from the most successful 12 months in the club’s history.

0 - The number of times Bayern lost in the Bundesliga in the calendar year - a feat that has never been achieved before!

1 - Bayern’s position in the standings on 27 of the 34 Bundesliga matchdays in 2013. FCB were only not top for the first seven games of the current campaign.

3 - Defeats in all competitions throughout the year, meaning Munich were undefeated in 95 percent of their matches.

5 - The number of trophies collected by Bayern in 2013: the Champions League, Bundesliga, DFB Cup, UEFA Super Cup and most recently the FIFA Club World Cup. The tally is bettered only by Barcelona, who won six trophies in 2009 under Pep Guardiola.

10 - Bayern’s record-breaking winning run in the Champions League up to and including the victory away to CSKA Moscow in November. The previous record of nine straight wins in Europe’s elite club competition was set by Barcelona in 2002/03.

14 - The number of consecutive victories posted by Bayern at the start of the second half of the season in 2012/13. That broke two records at once, as no Bundesliga side had ever managed 14 straight victories before!

16 - The number of Bundesliga matches without defeat presided over by Pep Guardiola – also a new record! The previous record of 14 was set by Kaiserslautern’s Karl-Heinz Feldkamp in 1978/79.

17 - Bayern won all 17 of their home league fixtures in the calendar year, matching their own record from 1972 and 2005.

18 - The number of goals conceded by Bayern in the 2012/13 Bundesliga season, the best defensive performance in the history of the league!

19 - The number of times FCB have been top of Bundesliga at the midpoint of the season. In 16 of the previous 18 cases the championship shield ended up in Munich.

20 - Franck Ribéry’s assists in 2013, making the Frenchman the best provider at the club. He was followed by Arjen Robben (18), Thomas Müller and Philipp Lahm (17 each).

25 - The winning margin in points at the end of the 2012/13 campaign between champions Bayern and runners-up Borussia Dortmund, the biggest-ever gap between two adjacent teams in the final standings.

26 - The club’s top marksman Thomas Müller’s goalscoring total in 2013! He was followed by Mario Mandzukic (23) and Arjen Robben (22).

28 - The number of matches FCB required before sealing the league title in April away to Frankfurt. The Bundesliga has never before been won at such an early stage!

41 - Bayern’s current unbeaten run in the Bundesliga, comfortably a new record! The best previous performance of 36 games undefeated was set by Hamburg from January 1982 until January 1983.

43 - Thomas Müller’s scorer points total for the year (26 goals, 17 assists). He was followed by Arjen Robben (40) and Franck Ribéry (38).

44 - Bayern’s points total from 16 Bundesliga fixtures in 2013/14 - a new league record!

50 - Games won by Lahm, Schweinsteiger & Co. in 2013, meaning FCB won just short of nine of every 10 matches they played.

53 - The number of consecutive league matches in which FCB have scored at least once, beating the club’s own record of 36 from May 1973 until May 1974.

56 - Number of matches played by FCB in 2013 in a total of six competitions: the Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and DFL Super Cup.

80 - Or to be more precise: +80. Bayern’s goal difference at the end of the 2012/13 Bundesliga campaign, easily a new league record!

93 - Total number of Bundesliga points taken by Bayern from 33 matches in the calendar year, a new record! The Reds only dropped a total of six points in 2013. The previous record of 87 points from 34 matches in 2005 was also set by the Reds.

159 - Total goals scored by FCB in 2013, an average of 2.8 per match.

207 - The number of countries in which the Bundesliga meeting between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern on 23 November was broadcast live, a new record for the German top flight.

250 - Number of accredited media representatives at the unveiling of Pep Guardiola as new Bayern coach on 24 June at the Allianz Arena, making the event the biggest press conference in the club’s history. Two days later, 180 reporters watched the new boss supervise his first training session.

2,018,500 - The total attendance at the Allianz Arena for the 29 home games (including the Audi Cup and the Uli Hoeneß Cup) in the year 2013. The average crowd was 69,603 with only two matches not entirely sold out.

Jan Kirchhoff joins Shalke on Loan

FC Bayern Munich and FC Schalke 04 have agreed a one-and-a-half year loan deal for defender Jan Kirchhoff, who will now play for the Gelsenkirchen club until 30 June 2015. Bayern have retained a recall option for the player after the loan agreement expires.

“I think this is a good decision for all three parties,” commented FC Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “Jan will certainly receive the playing time with Schalke that hasn’t proved possible in Munich up to now. We wish him all the very best and hope he continues to make good progress there, so that he might potentially return to FC Bayern in 2015.“

Great impressions and fond memories

When the Bayern stars made their way to Munich airport after the home meeting with Hamburg just over a week ago, none of them really knew what to expect in Morocco. It would definitely be warmer in North Africa, and the people would be lively and emotional. Nevertheless, it was difficult to say whether FCB would prove a hit in Agadir and Marrakech. But eight days and one trophy later, any doubts have been put to rest. “We immediately sensed great hospitality, love and warmth, the like of which I’ve rarely encountered,” summarised board director for sport Matthias Sammer.

Naturally, Munich made the trip first and foremost with the aim of collecting a fifth trophy of the year. However, there was still enough free time to escape the punishing footballing schedule and learn a little about the host nation. The most striking observation was the extreme contrasts, with humble circumstances on one side and glittering skyscrapers on the other, the snow-covered Atlas mountains compared with desert dunes stretching as far as the eye could see.

“It was a very good trip,” commented Thomas Müller, especially taken with the locals’ obvious joie de vivre: “The people here are extremely positive.” The newly-crowned Club World Cup winners were particularly surprised by the Moroccans’ knowledge and awareness of Germany’s biggest club. “They all knew everything and that was astounding,” said Müller, before adding with a cheeky grin: “We were even recognised by women, which doesn’t happen very often in Germany.”

It was more difficult to recognise Dante and Rafinha, who spent an afternoon exploring the famous souks of Marrakech and the sights of the city, for which they donned typical local clothing. Manuel Neuer also took a good hard look at the local culture, as he watched acrobats, parades, and snake charmers in close up.

On the day of the final the men from Munich were introduced to King Mohammed VI, on the throne since 1999. The reigning monarch attended the final and personally congratulated Bayern on their victory. “That definitely left a lasting impression,” noted Müller. But of course FCB made an impression of their own, on the world and especially in Morocco. Said Müller: “The tournament has huge significance for the global image of Bayern Munich!“

Uniquely successful

“My players knew they’d have to give everything to win this tournament,” advised Guardiola, who previously won the Club World Cup as a coach with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011. “Five trophies in a year is a magnificent success for Bayern. I’m delighted for the club and very proud of the players and the fans,” declared the Spaniard, explicitly praising the 2,000 travelling fans who gave the eventual champions such tremendous support.

“Being able to add another trophy, especially this one, at the end of the year is amazing,” summarised Lahm. “You don’t contest the Club World Cup every year. We’ve won the title, our fifth of the year, and basically that’s impossible to beat.“ Thomas Müller was just as enthusiastic about a historic 12 month period: “It’s a fairytale ending, the well-earned reward for the excellent year we’ve had. It's nearly impossible to play at the level we’ve done in this calendar year.“

Deserved break

In his speech to the banquet Rummenigge heaped praise on Guardiola and Jupp Heynckes, the two head coaches who were the architects of the marquee triumphs. “We’ve been incredibly lucky to have two coaches who’ve not only done a fantastic job but are also fantastic people,” said the chairman. Heynckes guided FCB to the prestigious treble of the Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League last season, and Guardiola’s first six months have yielded the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

“We’ve achieved everything we set out to achieve this year and that’s fantastic,” summarised keeper Manuel Neuer, describing the final official overseas trip of the year as “a terrific experience.” The players, coaching staff and management at the club can now set off into what is a truly well-deserved holiday break in upbeat and satisfied mood. “I’m certainly pleased we go on vacation now,” acknowledged Lahm, looking forward to “a few relaxing days. I think we’ve all deserved it.“

Reaction to Guangzhou vs Bayern

Pep Guardiola: “Congratulations to my team. They deserve their place in the final. We took it very seriously against a team with quick wide men. We had most of the possession, allowing us to control the game and create plenty of chances. But for all that it wasn’t easy. Marcello Lippi is one of the coaching greats.“

Marcello Lippi (Guangzhou Evergrande coach): “The difference between the strongest team in the world and the rest was obvious today. Bayern Munich always dominate their matches. We had nothing to offer in response to their superiority today. We were clearly inferior. But I can’t criticise my team for a decent performance. Appearing in the semi-finals at the Club World Cup is unimaginable after only a year and a half’s work.”

1976, 2001 - 2013?

Bayern won the Intercontinental Cup, the predecessor to the FIFA Club World Cup, back in 1976 and 2001. Now they aim to be the first German team to win the tournament since its relaunch in 2005. “The Club World Cup is a title you can't win every year,” captain Philipp Lahm said, noting the significance of the contest even though the trophy is much more highly valued in South America than in Europe. “I know that in some places, it is a very important competition.”

The Bundesliga leaders are up against Chinese powerhouses Guangzhou Evergrande, who beat African champions Al-Ahly 2-0 in the quarter final on Saturday to qualify for the semi-finals. “They are a very good team, with two or three incredibly strong individuals. We’ll be prepared, and we’re not expecting it to be an easy match,” said Sammer, keen for FCB not to underestimate the Chinese champions.

Pep aiming to win the last trophy of the year

Pep Guardiola: “Congratulations to FC Bayern for an unbelievable 2013. We ran into trouble in the second half today because we gave the ball away too cheaply. We have to put that right. The players are already thinking about Marrakech. I have to keep making the players aware of all the hard work we still have to do, although it’s always tough after Champions League matches. We’re flying to Morocco now aiming to win the last trophy of the year.“

Bayern to Contest 2014 MLS All-Star Game

German football is about to move into the 2013 winter break, but FC Bayern’s plans for the 2014 World Cup year are already taking shape. As part of the treble winners’ pre-season programme for the 2014/15 campaign, Germany’s biggest club will go on tour to the USA and feature in the traditional All-Star Game at 6.30 pm local time (3.30 am CET +1 day) on 6 August 2014 against a Major League Soccer (MLS) representative team. The game will be broadcast to more than 130 countries around the world, the MLS revealed at a press conference in Portland, Oregon on Thursday.

Reaction to Werder Bremen v Bayern:

Uli Hoeneß: “You can see we’re brimming with confidence and that Bremen are more concerned with the lower regions of the table because they don’t want to get dragged into a relegation fight. Those were the basic going-in positions prior to the match. We’re on an unbelievable run at the moment. Once this team takes the lead they really rev up the motor. As a Bayern fan and club president you just sit back and enjoy it.”

Pep Guardiola: “I’d like to say a big thank you to my team, because they were very, very good. It was an honour to be the coach here today. But I know Bremen are basically capable of playing much better than that.”

Bayern on unbelievable run

Super Bayern handed sorry Werder Bremen a 7-0 hiding at the Weser Stadium on Saturday, “It was an honour to be the coach here today,” Pep Guardiola enthused at the post-match press conference, “I’d like to say a big thank you to my team.” FCB president Uli Hoeneß was thrilled at the continuation of the Reds’ “unbelievable run. As a Bayern fan and club president you just sit back and enjoy it.”

Ribery Reaction to Werder Bremen v Bayern:

Franck Ribéry:
“We’re all delighted. We have to carry on exactly like that. There’s a terrific mentality to this team, we really enjoy it.”

Robben Sidelined for 6 weeks

The injury sustained by Arjen Robben in Bayern’s 2–0 DFB Cup victory away to FC Augsburg on Wednesday has turned out to be more serious than initially thought. The player was admitted to hospital in Augsburg for a full medical examination and for the wound to be treated and cleaned, after which Bayern chief medical officer Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt issued the following diagnosis on Thursday: “Arjen Robben has sustained a deep laceration extending into the knee joint. The impact of one of the [opposing player’s] studs on the thigh bone in the right leg has caused extensive haemorrhaging.“

Pending the results of further medical checks, Dr Müller-Wohlfahrt estimates the player will be sidelined for the next six weeks.

“Obviously I’m bitterly disappointed,” admitted Arjen Robben, “I’ve been in such good form and really looking forward to every game with our team, but now this has happened. However, I’ll return fully fit and rejoin the team as we pursue the targets we’ve set ourselves for the season.“

“We’re incredibly sorry Arjen picked up such a serious injury in Augsburg,” commented FC Bayern board director for sport Matthias Sammer. “Arjen was basically in the form of his life and has recently had a decisive role in so many of our games. Losing him now is a bitter blow. But he’ll get all the help he needs and he’ll be available to us again for the second half of the season.“

New Contract for David Alaba

It was cold, big flakes of snow were falling, and spray rose from the Allianz Arena turf with every step the players took. But the DFB Cup quarter-final against Fürth on that unpleasantly wintry evening of 10 February 2010 included a momentous event: David Alaba made his first appearance as a professional. Three and a half years have passed since then, and the 21-year-old has already amassed an impressive collection of honours. On Monday he also acquired a new contract, as the Austrian inked an extension to his current deal, originally set to expire in 2015, binding him to the club until 30 June 2018.

“I’m very, very pleased,” Alaba told the FCB News team shortly afterwards. Accompanied by his advisers and his father George he attended the signing ceremony in the afternoon on the management floor of the FCB ServiceCenter. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge spoke of “very pleasant talks. We’re extremely happy it’s come to a very good conclusion for both parties.“

Finance director Jan-Christian Dreesen described the new agreement as “a genuinely fair package for all parties, which reflects our appreciation of what David means to us. We’re all satisfied.“ Matthias Sammer expressed his approval of the deal: “You haven’t yet matured at 21. The message sent by David is very important. He wants to continue his journey with us.“

Race for The World Player of the Year 2013

Here’s yet another record in a year already overflowing with best-ever achievements: no fewer than six Bayern players are in the running for the FIFA Ballon d’Or! Bastian Schweinsteiger (German Player of the Year 2013), Thomas Müller, Franck Ribéry (UEFA Best Player in Europe 2013), Philipp Lahm, Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben are all on the 23-name FIFA shortlist for the World Player of the Year award.

Our picture shows the six FCB candidates proudly displaying the trophies collected in a magnificent year for the club: the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, German championship and DFB Cup. The exceptional collection of silverware has naturally influenced the selection of the potential winners of the world award.

Bayern 2-0 Eintracht Braunschweig

Bayern maintained their extraordinary winning run with a workmanlike 2–0 victory over promoted Eintracht Braunschweig in Saturday afternoon’s 14th Bundesliga fixture of the season. The result means Pep Guardiola’s side maintain their lead in the standings, and have now not lost in the league for 39 games in a row.

The 71,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw Arjen Robben claim the man of the match honours. The Dutch ace struck a first-half brace for the treble winners, who remain a tidy four points clear of Bayer Leverkusen and seven ahead of Borussia Dortmund in the table. Guardiola’s men are next in action on Wednesday in the challenging DFB Cup trip to Bavarian rivals FC Augsburg.

Taking nothing for granted

A few weeks prior to the mid-season break, the injury roster at Bayern is long. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribéry, Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro and Holger Badstuber are all unavailable to boss Pep Guardiola as he ponders his selection for the home Bundesliga meeting with Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday (Live in English from 3.30 pm on Twitter and FCB.tv Web Radio). Nevertheless, the treble winners are still looking to cement their grip on first place by taking all three points against the bottom club.

“I’m optimistic. Provided we stay hungry and keep playing attractive football we’ll be heading in the right direction,” said Mario Götze after the midweek Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow. However, despite the obvious gulf between the teams at the top and bottom of the standings, the league leaders have no intention of falling victim to complacency. “We have to be careful,” warned Arjen Robben, aware of the ever-present risk of underestimating the underdogs.

Records continue to tumble

No matter where FC Bayern play these days, a record seems to be broken and the Champions League is no exception. The 3-1 victory over CSKA Moscow marked Bayern’s tenth Champions League win in a row, setting a new benchmark. Barcelona had been top of the charts, winning nine matches in succession in 2002/03. On top of that, Bayern have set new club records by winning all five Champions League games so far, and extending their CL winning streak away from home to six straight.

Robben demands ‘focused performance'

The Reds go into the game having already qualified for the Round of 16. The priority now is to secure top position in the group. A win in Moscow alone cannot secure first place, as Manchester City would have to fail to beat Plzen, who are rooted to the bottom of the group without any points. The more likely scenario is that the match between Bayern and Manchester City in December will determine the winners of the group. However, victory against CSKA would put the Germans in an “amazing position,” as Uli Hoeneß said. Lahm added: ”We want to win, and we want to top the group.”

CSKA will do their best to stop Bayern. The Russians, who are fourth in their domestic league, have won their last four competitive matches and can secure the Europa League spot as third in the Champions League group with a win against Bayern. “Playing in Moscow in the Champions League is never easy,” Robben said. “We have to give a focused performance.”

According to club president Hoeneß, Guardiola's team cannot take the game “lightly,” but he also trusts the Bayern stars: ”The team has shown they perform well under pressure and when they’re favourites.” Guardiola reckons the game against Moscow will be a “question of our mental strength,” after the exhausting match against Dortmund, especially as CSKA are always “hard to play” in November. The Bayern coach is without Mario Mandzukic, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribéry, Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro and Diego Contento, all due to injuries.

Guardiola knows his team will have to perform “super, super well” if they are to wake up on Thursday morning knowing the three points are safely in the bag. The omens are hardly the best after a turbulent journey, but this is no excuse. “We have a lot of confidence!” Robben declared.

Bayern’s memories of Moscow

Clashes between Bayern and Russian teams normally end well for the Germans. In 15 matches the treble winners have only lost twice, winning seven times (including the first leg against CSKA). Six games ended without a winner. On Russian soil the Reds have only lost once, in the UEFA Cup semi-final against Zenit St. Petersburg in 2008 (4-0). However, Bayern’s memories of Moscow are happy ones. On their way to winning the UEFA Cup in 1996 (5-0 against Lokomotive Moscow) and the Champions League in 2001 (3-0 against Spartak Moscow), Bayern showed that the Russian winter need by no bar to success. Claudio Pizarro was in the squad in 2001, but will be missing the latest battle due to injury.

Pep Guardiola about the game against Dortmund

We are happy because we beat the best team at counterattacks in the world. We knew we had to control the first touches of Robert Lewandowski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. If you let them run, they’re unstoppable. Our first 15 minutes were good, the next 30 not so much. In the second half with Thiago Alcantara, Götze, Philipp Lahm and Toni Kroos, we played very well.

- Pep Guardiola about the game against Dortmund

Most Memorable Der Klassiker Matches

Bayern have played Dortmund 88 times so far in the Bundesliga’s 50-year history. FCB clearly lead the head-to-head comparison on 38 wins to BVB’s 22, with 28 drawn games. The men from Munich have scored a total of 164 goals and conceded 111 in the series, with many of the clashes deservedly earning a place in the annals of the league’s most memorable games. fcbayern.de has delved into the archives and selected the most memorable meetings between Bayern and Dortmund.

Bayern v Dortmund – action and incident guaranteed

9 September 1967: Libuda’s big day
The 40,000 crowd at Dortmund’s Rote Erde Stadium were entertained royally. Gustav Jung handed Bayern the lead on his Bundesliga debut, but Lothar Emmerich struck twice to turn the game on its head. However, Jung scored again and Dieter Brenninger hit another to make it 3-2 to the Reds at half-time. It was a different story in the second half as Dortmund winger Stan Libuda moved to centre stage. Libuda set up a total of four goals with Rudi Assauer, Emmerich and Reinhold Wosab netting three times in the space of five minutes. Libuda personally made the final score 6-3 in the last minute.

27 November 1971: Biggest winning margin
The match at Grünwalder Stadium produced no fewer than 12 goals, and 11 of them were for FC Bayern! Gerd Müller hit four, Uli Hoeneß and Bulle Roth each claimed a brace, and Franz Beckenbauer, Paul Breitner and Willi Hoffmann all added their names to the scoresheet. In the midst of the rain of goals, Dieter Weinkauff netted Dortmund’s consolation. The 11-1 triumph remains Bayern biggest-ever Bundesliga victory. FCB scored 101 goals that season and won the title, but Dortmund were relegated.

21 May 1983: Frenzied goal action
After succeeding Pal Csernai four days earlier, former assistant coach Reinhard Saftig took charge of FCB for the first time. It was Matchday 32 and there was little at stake, with Bayern set to finish fourth and Dortmund seventh, but the interim coach’s debut was a thriller. Dieter Hoeneß, Udo Horsmann and Klaus Augenthaler handed Munich the lead three times at the Westfalenstadion, but BVB levelled it up three times through Marcel Raducanu (2) and Manfred Burgsmüller. Then Erdal Keser scored to edge Dortmund into the lead, but not for long: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored in the same minute of play to restore the deadlock. The last three goals fell in just three minutes and it finished 4-4.

9 August 1986: An infamous miss
The opening match in 1986/87 would normally not have gone down in Bundesliga history. It finished 2-2 at the Olympiastadion with Roland Wohlfarth and Lothar Matthäus on target for FC Bayern and Daniel Simmens and Michael Zorc scoring equalisers. However, with the score 1-1, the game produced one of the most infamous moments in league history: Frank Mill, playing his first league match for Dortmund, rounded Bayern keeper Jean-Marie Pfaff and made to slot home, only to hit the post from three yards out! Mill laid on his side’s second equaliser, but it was scant consolation.

3 April 1999: Kung-fu Kahn
Ottmar Hitzfeld coached Bayern away to his former club for the first time. FCB comfortably led the league, but it was a typically turbulent game at the Westfalenstadion. Heiko Herrlich struck a brace in the first half hour to put BVB 2-0 up, and Bayern’s Sammy Kuffour was later sent off. But Dortmund’s Stefan Reuter was also given his marching orders early in the second half, and Alexander Zickler and Carsten Jancker struck to make it 2-2. However, Oliver Kahn was the centre of attention afterwards - not only because he saved a Lars Ricken penalty near the end, but due to two bizarre pieces of behaviour late on: first he nibbled at Herrlich’s jaw, and later indulged in a spot of kung fu against Stephane Chapuisat.

4 November 2000: Goals galore
The 62,000 crowd at the Olympiastadion saw one of the highest-scoring games between Bayern and Dortmund. Heiko Herrlich handed the visitors, coached by Matthias Sammer, a second-minute lead but Bayern struck back with venom: Hasan Salihamidzic and Mehmet Scholl both scored twice, with Giovane Elber and Paulo Sergio also on target in a 6-2 victory. Otto Addo netted Dortmund’s second, but BVB defender Jörg Heinrich was sent off.

7 April 2001: Card confetti
The reverse fixture that season produced far fewer goals, and in any case the strikes traded by Roque Santa Cruz and Fredi Bobic proved just a sideshow, because the top of the table clash between leaders Bayern and second-placed Dortmund goes down in history for a different reason: no game before or since has featured as many yellow and red cards! Referee Hartmut Strampe showed a total of 11 yellow cards, and also sent off Bixente Lizarazu, Stefan Effenberg and Evanilson.

9 November 2002: Koller at both ends
Champions Dortmund visited leaders Bayern, and it was another high-octane encounter with three yellow cards and two sendings off, for BVB’s Thorsten Frings and Jens Lehmann. Not unexpectedly it was a dour, hard-fought clash, with Jan Koller handing the visitors a first-half lead. Roque Santa Cruz and Claudio Pizarro turned it around in the second half, and it could have been a bigger win but for Koller. The striker went in goal after Lehmann was sent off in the 67th minute, because the visitors had already used all their substitutes. FCB could not find a way past Koller, who even won a place in kicker magazine’s team of the day - as a goalkeeper.

13 April 2008: In-form FCB
Three days after the famous Miracle of Getafe Bayern showed no signs of a hangover from the dramatic 120-minute UEFA cup quarter-final return. The 69,000 at the Allianz Arena saw a gala display from the Bundesliga leaders as goals from Luca Toni (2), Lukas Podolski, Zé Roberto and Andreas Ottl made the final score 5-0. In an ironic twist, the teams met again a week later in the DFB cup final, although it was a much closer affair in Berlin. FCB won it 2-1 after extra time thanks to another Toni brace.

12 September 2009: Müller explodes onto the scene
Bayern’s biggest-ever win away to Dortmund was an ultimately one-sided affair. BVB matched their opponents for 20 minutes or so and Mats Hummels even opened the scoring, but Mario Gomez equalised before half-time. In the second half Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribéry and substitute Thomas Müller with his first two Bundesliga goals made the final score 5-1. Müller has been a Bayern regular ever since.

26 February 2011: End of an era
Dortmund travelled to the Allianz Arena with a comfortable lead in the league, and won in Munich for the first time in 19 years. In a pulsating encounter, Luiz Gustavo cancelled out Dortmund’s lead through Lucas Barrios, but Nuri Sahin and Mats Hummels sealed BVB’s 3-1 victory.

Der Klassiker 1982/83

One of the Classic Match "Der Klassiker" between Bayern Munchen and Dortmund.
Season of 1982/83

Lahm and Neuer resume training in Säbener Strasse

Winter is slowly but surely drawing in at the Säbener Strasse facility. Manuel Neuer and Philipp Lahm, who returned from Germany international duty on Sunday and completed individual workouts yesterday, were no exception in their choice of kit when they rejoined their club colleagues.

When the Germans face England in a prestige friendly on Tuesday night, Neuer and Lahm will be watching on TV. “It was all arranged with the national coach,” said Lahm. “Obviously it’s always good to play at Wembley because we have great memories of the stadium.” Nevertheless, the versatile defender said he was “glad to have a couple of days at home.” And, added Lahm, the regeneration training of the last couple of days has done “a great deal of good.”

Good Prospects For Schweinsteiger Recovery

The icing on the cake of a very satisfactory annual general meeting two days ago was the news of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s successful ankle surgery. “Bastian has just texted Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The operation’s gone very well,” FCB president Uli Hoeneß announced shortly before the end of the event. “It’s all looking a lot better than we feared.”

Surgeons Prof Ulrich Stöckle and Prof Hans Zwipp have now issued a firm prognosis for the player’s recovery. The medics are confident Schweinsteiger will be fully fit again by the time of the winter training camp in early January at the latest.

Schweinsteiger underwent corrective surgery on Wednesday to fix long-term and persistent problems with his right ankle. During the operation, surgeons removed extra-articular (located away from the ankle joint itself) ossification caused by a previous round of surgery.

Lahm and Neuer Return to Munich

Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer have returned early from international duty. On Saturday, the day after Germany’s 1–1 draw with Italy in Milan, the Bayern pair returned to Munich while the rest of the German squad travelled on to England prior to Tuesday’s friendly at Wembley. “The game against England is our last opportunity to try out a few tactical and line-up variations before the World Cup,” commented national coach Joachim Löw, explaining why he was declining to field his captain and first-choice goalkeeper in London. “The important thing at the moment is for me to try out other players in key positions and give them a decent chance against a great team like England.“

new record turnover of €432.8 million

Away from the field of play, the club announced new record turnover of €432.8 million, and the third-highest profit in club history at €14 million. “FC Bayern is in robust good health, squared,”  jested Rummenigge, reflecting on a “flood of records” at the current time. “We’re continuing to play first-class, successful and sometimes spectacular football.” Perhaps, when the club gathers again at the Audi Dome a year from now, the stage might even be a little more crowded.

Greatest-Ever Year

Trophies at the front of the hall are always an important component of Bayern’s closely observed Annual General Meeting. Last year there were none – but the 2013 gathering was blessed with no fewer than four major trophies. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge feels there is room for another: “Pep, we have an assignment for you,” declared the chairman, looking forward to the Club World Cup in December. “I hope you can fulfil it. We could make space up here on the stage.” The 3,573 members in the Audi Dome laughed, Guardiola grinned - and returned his gaze to the glittering array of prizes.

“We’ve all been through an unbelievable year,” continued Rummenigge, “it’s probably the most extraordinary and wonderful time ever in the 113-year history of FC Bayern. It can never have been better to be a fan of this football club.“ Even the great team of the 70s never won the treble, Rummenigge noted.

“You won’t believe how proud I am of this club,” added Hoeneß. The club’s image and reputation has soared around the world, so it is no accident that FCB are preparing to open a New York office, possibly followed by a branch in Shanghai. The meeting repeatedly responded enthusiastically to mentions of the previous season, with personal acclaim for Hoeneß and last season’s treble-winning coach Jupp Heynckes.
